Like many companies, Seyi, the second largest press manufacturer in Taiwan, faces increasing global competition. With annual sales in excess of 2500 presses, the company continually strives to increase its market share in Asia, the United States and Europe.
According to Huang Ming Tsan, supervisor, Division of Electrical Engineering at Seyi's headquarters, although the company has offices in Taiwan, China and the USA, its presses are delivered worldwide and about 10% of sales are destined for Europe. Most of Seyi's customers are within the automotive and IT or computer industries.
Operator control in focus
With press capacity ranging from 25 to 1600 tons, full operator control is vital and Seyi has chosen touchscreen operator terminals from Beijer Electronics as its human machine interface (HMI). These terminals are used in many of the presses for a variety of purposes, including tool settings, alarm handling and piece counting.
Robin Lu of R&D, says that one of the features that strengthened the decision to use these operator terminals was dual driver capability, which enables the presses to communicate with different control equipment simultaneously. This provides a cost efficient and simple solution. Lu also lauded the configuration software. "It is a user-friendly software which is easy to learn and simplifies the procedure of making the necessary changes to the different presses in our production line."

Asked what impressed him most about working with Beijer Electronics Robin Lu said succinctly:
* Value for money.
* Level of technical support.
* Local representation.
He added: "It was important for us to find a supplier with representation in Taiwan. We have worked with Beijer Electronics' products for eight years and are pleased with their technical support. About four years ago we had system stability problems with some of the terminals, but this was taken care of by the local representatives who used their technical skills to solve the problem cost effectively."
Improvements to come
Seyi constantly looks for ways to improve its presses and two of the terminal features that Robin Lu is looking forward to are support for memory stick and Ethernet communication. "I have seen the Beijer EXTER terminals at exhibitions. They look robust and have increased functionality; this means a solution that can be tailored to specific customer requirements," he concludes.
