New Magelis iPC a benchmark in HMI applications

November 2006 SCADA/HMI

The spectrum of industry wanting indication and the ability to run Windows-based software, such as scada, can now deploy a completely new offer of industrial PCs to meet a broad range of human machine interface (HMI) applications. Keeping pace with the evolution of PC technology, Schneider Electric has launched its completely updated industrial PC offer.

Adapted to address industrial constraints and conforming to the Transparent Ready concept, the Magelis iPC meets the dual objectives of simplification of the Schneider Electric man-machine interface offer and further defines segmentation of customer applications.

According to Schneider Electric South Africa's automation product manager, Linda Eales: "The Magelis iPC means benefiting from the latest features of Microsoft Windows, in particular its openness and high-level ergonomics. Using Intel Pentium M microprocessors, the three Magelis iPC ranges will transform the world of advanced automated systems."

The Magelis Modular iPC offers a high level of flexibility and extended services for customer applications. These include the ability to easily build customised solutions using a perfectly adapted choice of interfaces and central processing units; comprehensive diagnostic tools around the PC and its environment, alerting the user to maintenance requirements; the ability to mix and match interfaces and CPUs, with its modular design enabling easy maintenance with interchangeability of a standard CD-ROM reader or optional DVD writer combo, hard drive and power supply.

The iPC's openness makes it one of the best communicators on the market, with USB ports and serial ports, Ethernet access and eight extension slots. With its support of the Modicon Atrium PLC slot (PLC inside), it offers one of the best HMIs for a combined HMI/PC solution.

The Magelis Compact iPC offers machine solutions from the simplest to the most complex. It is open to HMI and supervision applications and to numerous automation architectures thanks to the choice of Intel Pentium microprocessor and Microsoft Windows. Communication is adapted to the machine environment, with two embedded TCP/IP Ethernet connections. The product also offers optional wireless connections.

The Magelis Compact iPC provides a wide viewing angle screen and sensitive touch pad for operator comfort as well as PCI or PCMCIA extension card capability.

Continues Eales: "The Magelis Smart iPC is the ideal compromise between industrial PC and operator terminal for developing customer solutions under Windows. It is simple and user-friendly, with the user benefiting from the flexibility of Windows XP - embedded for standard customer applications such as Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, Excel, Word and more."

Internet and intranet access means local or remote operation, diagnostics and maintenance. Its easy on the eye, with a 12" (30,5 cm) or 15" (38,1 cm) touchscreen and clear graphics. Architecture development has been simplified through two 10/100 Mbps fast Ethernet ports, two PCMCIA extension slots and a Compact Flash card for data storage, all of which offer the easy integration for which Telemecanique is world renowned.

As an operator terminal, Magelis Smart iPC is open to client scada applications, and it makes up the optimum client for FactoryCast HMI Web servers to ensure advanced remote diagnostics. The range's dimensions are identical to Magelis XBTGT terminals (for the same size screen), with Magelis Smart iPC and Compact iPC natural extension of terminals.

When used in conjunction with Vijeo Designer software, Magelis XBTGT terminals, Smart iPC and Compact iPC guarantee optimum flexibility - a hardware range, choice of operating system and a single software package enabling control of all HMI applications, from the simplest to the most complex.

In addition to the native benefits of Microsoft Windows, the three industrial PC ranges of the Magelis iPC family, coupled to Vijeo Designer and Vijeo Look software, can also control all HMI applications.

The choice of latest generation Intel Pentium processors, preinstalled Microsoft Windows software, openness to communication networks and interoperability with automation software make Magelis iPC an ideal partner for manufacturers of simple or complex unitary or network machines, and for major industrial users demanding ruggedness, reliability, communication capability and ease of maintenance.
