ABB Transmission & Distribution in South Africa, part of the global technology group ABB, has announced that it has handed over the new 400 kV Edwaleni II substation in Swaziland to the Swaziland Electricity Board (SEB), the Kingdom's utility.
The substation is a major milestone for Swaziland as it will be the main power supply for the country. It is also a key component of the transmission system to Mozal, the US$1bn Billiton smelter in Mozambique. Nkomeni Ntiwane, Chairman of SEB, says: "This substation will increase bulk supply capacity and also heralds a new dawn in the manner in which SEB can purchase bulk power from other utilities within the Southern African Power Pool." SEB said providing power to rural communities would be a greater stimulus to economic development.
The substation is a portion of the R90m contract awarded to ABB last year. In addition to the new Edwaleni substation, the contract includes a new smaller substation and the upgrade of four others.
Per Wanland, Managing Director, ABB Transmission & Distribution, says: "We are pleased to have played an important role in contributing to the Southern African Power Pool." Wanland said during the last three years, the company has grown its exports out of South Africa to more than 50% of the order intake. "This shows our commitment to the region," he added.
Other ABB companies that are involved in the project are ABB Powertech Transformers for the supply of transformers and ABB Automation for relay control systems.
