Condition monitoring taken one step further with Rittal's Wireless Sensor Network

September 2006 Sensors & Transducers

Rittal is launching its advanced 'Wireless Sensor Network' concept for industrial applications.

To achieve a high level of safety in the IT industry and automation technology, the full monitoring of data centres in factories, their environmental conditions, infrastructure as well as fittings, is important. This also covers enclosure systems, switch rooms and separate field enclosures, in addition to entire production environments. The company has extended its expertise in the field by adding the 'Wireless Sensor Network' to CMC-TC (Computer Multi Control TopConcept) computer-controlled monitoring system. With the aid of a corresponding radio network, even complex industrial infrastructures can be checked rapidly and safely, without the need for any additional cabling. Sensors to check temperature and moisture can be easily fitted within enclosures (or outside of them) depending on whether information on temperature and heat flow is critical for the operation. Other future sensor products include vandalism sensors, access sensors, and a wireless, monitored TS8 masterkey handle as an access system to Rittal enclosure units, a wireless keypad and a voltage sensor with switch output.

The data collected is evaluated centrally by CMC-TC. An individual Web server allows work to be conducted comfortably with an Internet browser. The CMC-TC transmits information via network and SNMP to the existing NMSs (network management systems). In this way, possible sources of interference can be quickly found and dealt with.

Rittal's Wireless Sensor Network makes condition monitoring in branched infrastructures easy because all the measured data is transferred to a central CMC-TC instance for evaluation without any need for wires.

The communication relationships, in other words the assignments of sensors to their base station, are set up via a 'teach-in' procedure. The sealed radio sensors transmit in the 2-4 GHz frequency range (ISM band) and permit data transmission rates of up to 2 Mbps.

Rittal guarantees data communication in the sensor network that is not susceptible to interference or bugging, thanks to combined modulation procedures. It employs 'Chirp' transmission technology. In closed rooms, ranges of up to 50 m are possible.
