Instrotech supplies non-contact ultrasonic sensors

September 2006 Sensors & Transducers

Instrotech is the appointed distributor for a range of non-contact ultrasonic sensors for distance measurement and control, manufactured by Senix in the US.

The sensors have application in:

* Level control.

* Proximity sensing.

* Positioning.

* Sorting and selection of objects based on differences in physical dimensions.

* Determining volume or width.

* Detecting a broken web in printing presses and paper machines.

* Locating, identifying and positioning of containers in materials handling.

Senix sensors measure the distance or presence of a target object by sending a sound wave, above the range of hearing, at the object and then measuring the time for the sound echo to return. By knowing the speed of sound, the sensor calculates the distance of the object and sets its output(s) accordingly.

Configuration is either with a self-contained pushbutton or via a PC using SoftSpan software. This means that potentiometers are not required for most adjustments. Pushbutton operation includes all the usual output settings, as well as analog slope reversal. PC adjustments include 75 parameters with features such as measurement rate, averaging, filtering, switch hysteresis and window size to providing high adaptability and flexibility.

Types for light industrial and tough factory applications are available. The measurement range is up to 11,3 m to an accuracy of 0,5% of target distance under constant environmental conditions.
