Lasermeters to effectively measure level and position

August 2006 Level Measurement & Control

Laser Measurement, a supplier of level and positioning transmitters worldwide, supplies LM150S and LM80 lasermeters for level and positioning applications used in process control. The company's product range is applicable to a variety of industries such as food and beverage, petrochemical, and mining.

The LM150S model can be used for volumetric scanning of solids within a silo or bunker. Features include up to 16 virtual lasers with multiplexed 4-20 mA output, up to four virtual lasers with their own dedicated 4-20 mA output and direct aiming up to 100 points on multiplexed analog output. It is specified to have a diagonal measuring range of 0,5 to 35 m, a resolution of 1%, a distance measuring accuracy of 25 m, a volumetric accuracy of typically 1% and an update rate of 2 to 3 minutes per scan on static surfaces.

The LM80 lasermeter is a rugged unit with a strong cast aluminium housing and comes with lightning and surge protection on both the 24 V d.c. power supply and signal lines. Two mechanical relays with an output AC rating of 1 A at 120 V a.c. and 0,5 A at 220 V a.c., or an output DC rating of 1 A at 60 V d.c. is incorporated. The unit is available in a 0,5 to 25 m level unit for short range applications such as crusher and bin levels, and a 0,5 to 150 m positioning unit for applications such as tripper cars, over head cranes and stacker-reclaimers. This model is available as a standard environment laser transmitter or with special adaptation for hygiene conditions as well as a hot glass unit, which solves the problem of condensation on the lenses. A visible pointer for easy alignment is available as an optional extra.

This product is specified to measure a distance up to 150 m at a resolution of 10 mm and an accuracy of ±25 mm. Readings update at a rate of three readings per second for distances up to 80 m, and 1,5 readings per second up to one reading per 60 seconds for distances between 80 and 150 m.

The LM80 incorporates newly developed software that maximises the dust penetration capabilities by automatically adjusting the power level of the laser to allow it to penetrate dust more effectively. Setup of this unit is made easier with simplified user menus and menu options and can also be done with the laser communication device. This device requires no batteries as it draws power from the unit and can be used for mA setup and program selection with a display screen for convenience.
