Radar level transmitters for process level applications

August 2006 Level Measurement & Control

The Rosemount 5600 Series is a range of intelligent non-contacting radar level transmitters. This series uses microwave technology to achieve reliability and precision in the measurement of liquid and slurry levels. The transmitter operates in a wide range of temperatures, pressures, vapour gas mixtures and various process conditions. Its high performance microprocessor allows for advanced signal processing and smart echo-tracking features. Together with its high sensitivity, the radar transmitter can detect and evaluate all echoes within a tank or vessel. A variety of process level applications, from simple to complex, can be configured.

Model 5601 from the series utilises a software module that improves measurement reliability in tanks with sources of false echo. When there are objects in the tank causing false echoes - such as agitators, baffles, mixers, pipes, and heating coils - the transmitter must be able to distinguish between the actual liquid surface and the interfering echoes. This software module adds sophisticated functionality to improve its ability to separate interfering echoes from the surface echo. The software can also use information provided by the operator in conjunction with the automatically collected data.

This product range has a high sensitivity and repeatability, which results in reliable and accurate measurements even under tough conditions. For all radar transmitters, a certain amount of microwave energy has to return to the transmitter. A reliable measurement can only be made if the reflected signal is sufficiently stronger than the noise. This is why sensitivity (or signal-to-noise ratio) is one of the most important qualities when differentiating high-quality transmitters from less reliable transmitters. A high signal-to-noise ratio makes it possible to detect and measure weaker echoes - which normally appear in process tanks where conditions often change.
