SEW Eurodrive supports skills development

August 2006 News

Drive engineering specialist, SEW Eurodrive, is sponsoring The South African Association of Consulting Engineers' (SAACE) Young Engineer of the Year Award as part of the Glenrand MIB Engineering Excellence Awards being held at the Sandton Sun on 2 August 2006.

SEW Eurodrive's sponsorship of the award will allow the winning young engineer to attend the annual conference of the International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC) and to participate in the Young Professional's Forum (YPF) being held in Budapest, Hungary, later this year. Rene Rose, marketing manager of SEW Eurodrive, comments: "Skills development is very important at SEW Eurodrive and we welcome the opportunity to support the Association with the sponsorship of this award. This initiative is aimed at exposing young engineering graduates to the world and to put them in the driving seat for the future."

The YPF is a mentorship initiative of SAACE that allows young people to influence decision making for the future. It aims to recognise and expose young talent in order to develop and hone their technical and leadership skills. SEW Eurodrive sees this as supportive of the government's Joint Initiative of Priority Skills Acquisition (JIPSA). This initiative is a collaboration between business, labour and government to attract offshore skills in order to alleviate the current skills shortage and as a means to mentor graduates, and in so doing, contribute towards the growth of the country. JIPSA is high on the agenda of the government's Accelerated and Shared Growth Initiative for South Africa (ASGISA) which aims to remove obstacles to the country's economic growth and is one of deputy president Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka's main focuses.

To promote the consulting engineering industry to young professionals, SAACE recognises the contribution young engineers make to the industry and to the future of the profession. Nominees in this category must be graduates younger than 35. The nomination may be made by co-workers but must be approved by the head of the firm. The winner must be available to receive the award and attend the FIDIC convention. Furthermore, he or she must be available to serve on the Young People's Forum (YPF) of SAACE for a 12-month period.

Judges look for outstanding performance in areas such as technical achievement on a project; educational achievement; recognition such as awards received; and contributions to sustainable development including environmental initiatives, social responsibility and community involvement. And finally, the winner in this category must have leadership ability, and contribute to the image of his or her firm and the industry as a whole.
