Level Measurement & Control

First flexible gamma-based level detector

June 2006 Level Measurement & Control

The Fibreflex radiometric level detector from Ohmart/Vega utilises a special fibre-optic bundle as the scintillator, and is believed to be the only one of its kind in the world. The flexibility of the scintillator allows the instrument to be installed on vessels with angled or curved sides, or to bend round vessel structures and obstacles. This non-contacting, flexible characteristic brings significant advantages to the nuclear level gauge user over both solid scintillators and traditional ion chambers.

Radiation level measurements use a source holder on one side of the vessel and a detector on the other side. The source holder emits a pre-determined amount of radiation (based on the source isotope and activity strength) at a known collimation angle. The focused radiation travels through all vessel walls, liners, etc, to the detector on the other side. The detector senses the radiation and produces a 4-20 mA DC output signal. When the product rises in the vessel, it blocks a portion of the radiation beam. The detector senses the reduction in radiation and alters the output signal to match.

The Fibreflex has a distinct weight reduction advantage, as the need for a steel pipe housing is eliminated. The lightweight scintillation fibres are encased in a galvanised steel flexible conduit. This gives good strength and environmental resistance with low weight. The conduit comes in lengths of up to 7 metres, which reduces the need for multiple detectors. The whole level detector is simple and safe to install.

Industries which would benefit from Fibreflex's unique qualities and flexible length include petrochemical, chemical, offshore, power, mining, refining and pulp and paper. The device is available with a variety of outputs including frequency for remote-mounted electronics, Foundation Fieldbus and 4 to 20 mA d.c. HART.
