Durban Island View tank gets coatings makeover

Engen Refineries, a past client of Sigma Coatings on whose supplier specification list the company is featured, approached the company to work with contractor RJ Contractors and fabricator Murray & Roberts to provide the paint for the roof and internal surfaces of a crude-oil carrying tank.

Project specifications

The surface preparation involved the tank's surfaces being blasted to SA 2.5 before the Sigma Coatings products were applied by airless spraying. The paint specifications were as follows:

Internal:

* Primer: SigmaCover 280 Primer @ 60 mm.

* Two coats of SigmaGuard CSF 650 @ 250 mm.

Roof:

* Primer: SigmaCover 280 Primer @ 60 µm.

* Intermediate: Two coats of SigmaGuard CSF 650 @ 250 µm.

* Top coat: SigmaDur 550 RAL 6017 at 50 µm for UV resistance.

Alvin Varaden, Sigma Coatings KwaZulu-Natal regional manager, says, "It was as essential as ever to ensure that the surfaces were correctly prepared before painting. However, the risks on this job were enormous: If the paint did not adhere to the internal surfaces adequately, it was at risk of flaking off and contaminating the crude oil stored in the tank. The cost of such an incident would be huge, so all parties concerned, and Sigma Coatings in particular, had to ensure that the surfaces were painstakingly prepared."
