Elquip Solutions, a local distributor of quality global automation products, is offering Hitachi's Web Controller; which is a microcontroller that combines realtime monitoring and control with a communications function that allows for contact any time and anywhere. Mike Cronin, managing director of Elquip Solutions, the South African distributor for Hitachi's products says: "The Hitachi Web Controller utilises a realtime control functionality to provide complete monitoring and controlling. Existing or new equipment used in a factory or a building can now be connected to a local area network (LAN) quickly and affordably and can then be accessed remotely by use of a virtual private network (VPN) or similar secure remote access protocol."
The Web Controller is an all-in-one controller: the power, central processing unit (CPU), input/output, web server, SMTP Protocol and communication interface all contained in one module, reducing the space and time required for installation. It has been designed to operate in industrial environments and is therefore equipped to cope with continuous 24 hour operation and monitoring.
Hitachi's Web Controller has the following additional advantages and features:
* It is both a PLC and a web server with PLC functionality and built-in input/outputs, which allows for normal PLC operation.
* Its web server function allows html pages displaying data from within the PLC to be stored. This means that an operator or manager can monitor or interact with their equipment from any location around the world by using a standard PC browser.
* By using the SMTP Protocol, e-mails warning of a fault or showing status of the equipment can be automatically sent when required.
* The automatic data transmission/receiving function allows data to be transmitted periodically to a specified personal computer or another PLC.
* Applications for a tool such as the Web Controller are numerous.
These applications extend to:
* Security monitoring and detection of trespassing and other abnormalities or deviation from routine.
* Monitoring and controlling of equipment by receiving data from the PLC via an access portal anywhere in the world.
* Facility automation by controlling the operational status of various equipment such as temperature control, or surveillance.
By supplying its customers with the Web Controller from Hitachi, Elquip Solutions is essentially bringing them a two-in-one solution. The web controller uses the realtime control function to process simultaneously the sequence control function of the PLC and the communication function of the web server.
