SANAS celebrates 10 years

April 2006 News

The South African National Accreditation System is celebrating both its 10th anniversary and the accreditation of its 1000th facility in March 2006. This significant milestone (in just 10 years), makes it one of the largest accreditation bodies in both the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) and the International Accreditation Forum (IAF).

SANAS certificates are a formal recognition that an organisation is competent to perform specific tasks. SANAS accreditation gives formal recognition that Laboratories, Certification Bodies, Inspection Bodies and Good Laboratory Practice test facilities are competent to carry out specific tasks.

When SANAS was inaugurated in 1996 it had a platform of approximately 135 accredited laboratories. Ten years later, it has accredited over 1000 conformity assessment organisations and has concluded numerous international agreements, which means that the results generated by local accredited organisations are accepted as technically equivalent in all countries that have been peer evaluated by its international peers.

On 4 March SANAS hosted a gala dinner at which the contributions of various individuals were highlighted. The occasion was attended by foremost representatives of the industry, including representatives from the Ministry of Trade and Industry, the chairperson of SANAS, Laurraine Lötter, the CEO of SANAS, Mike Peet, and the SANAS Board.

The event recognised the increasing use by industry and Government regulatory bodies of this important tool to recognise technical competence. It will also be used to launch the international accreditation symbols of ILAC and IAF that SANAS' accredited facilities are now entitled to use. This puts South Africa in the forefront of this technically sophisticated activity and removes important obstacles that local industry might face in addressing technical barriers to trade.
