Concilium Technologies expands MTN's acceSS7 OSS

April 2006 News

Concilium Technologies is expanding the Agilent Technologies' acceSS7 operational support system (OSS) at MTN to cover more of its 2.5G network and parts of its 3G network in a multimillion dollar deal.

Andrew Cole, Concilium Telecoms and Broadcast Division manager, says Concilium received the order for the expansion in January 2006. It is the fourth time MTN has expanded Agilent's acceSS7 system. "acceSS7 OSS gives realtime data monitoring on MTN's signalling links, which are responsible for managing either voice or data calls on MTN's network," says Cole.

While the initial installation of acceSS7 in 2001 gave MTN the ability to monitor its SS7 GSM network and the calls being made on it, the system had been expanded to include monitoring of the 2,5G and 3G networks as well.

Cole says the latest expansion will also provide MTN with three Business Intelligence solutions as well: "The first is an Agilent's OSS Data Mining Toolkit, which is an historical analysis and reporting tool that manipulates calls and transaction detail records to provide a comprehensive and intelligent view of network and service usage. The second is GPRS Session Trace, which provides an intuitive view of a subscriber's GPRS session for proactive and reactive faultfinding. And the last tool is the QoS (quality of service) Manager, which will enable MTN to monitor service performance and availability on its network. The QoS Manager manages a variety of wireless technologies, including GSM, GPRS and IP."

"These tools will give MTN the ability to analyse a whole range of information, and deliver valuable insights into every aspect of network, service and customer activity, providing MTN with proactive management and ensuring customer satisfaction. MTN will then be able to feed this information back to its marketing and strategic planning divisions to evolve its business," says Cole.

"MTN is focused on increasing the quality, capacity and availability of packet data services like EDGE, 3G and HSDPA. The expanded acceSS7 functionality will allow operations and planning personnel to improve service on both network and individual customer levels," adds Ben Wolmarans, senior manager at MTN. The installation is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2006.
