Operator Interfaces, Switches & Relays

Highly visible display for the field

December 2005 Operator Interfaces, Switches & Relays Surveillance

With a brilliant blue backlit display for excellent reading even under adverse lighting conditions, Endress+Hauser's RIA141 has been designed for use in hazardous areas. The RIA141 utilises the brilliant blue backlit display of the TMT 162 temperature transmitter, for excellent reading in bright sunshine or in pitch darkness from a distance of up to 12 feet. The unit connects directly to the analog 4 to 20 mA signal and displays the result in desired units on its LC display.

One of the display's most noteworthy features is its robust metal housing, which fulfils an IP65 protection classification. Although the RIA141 can be supplied with Exd (explosion proof) approval, it is also suitable for use in non-hazardous areas. This robust housing allows the RIA141 to be used as a field mounted device in extreme environments such as mining, petrochemical and chemical industries. It is also available in a stainless-steel housing, increasing its resistance to even harsher environments.

In addition to the measured value, the engineering units (freely programmable) are also displayed. The display shows the actual measured value as a digital value and a 10% step trend bar graph. The digital indicator has five, 20,5 mm high digits. A preset alarm set point violation (over or undercutting the set point or unit failure) can be monitored front-end and transmitted using a digital set point output.

With other devices, optimal visualisation cannot be guaranteed under certain installation conditions. On the RIA141 this issue has been skilfully resolved. The display can be rotated in 90° steps and is therefore not dependent on the installation positioning of the housing. The device can be mounted directly onto a wall or can be mounted on a stand pipe, using a U-bolt mounting kit.

Set-up of the RIA141 is performed outside the hazardous area. The display can be configured using the three operating push buttons or with a PC and the ReadWin 2000 operating software. It is connected to the USB port of a PC or laptop using a set-up adapter. The necessary power supply to the field transmitter is supplied via the set-up adapter during the device set up - no additional power source is required.

The standard device is supplied with the EU conformity declaration (CE) and general purpose device security for the USA (UL) and Canada (CSA-GP). The unit can, however, also be ordered with Exd approval according to ATEX, FM and CSA.
