In October, Siemens Energy was awarded two special certificates by Eskom for outstanding safety achievements at the Majuba power station. The company achieved a staggering 800 000 man-hours and working eight years without a disabling injury. Siemens engineered, installed, commissioned and optimised the control systems for units 4 to 6 at Eskom's newest power station. "We at Majuba power station realise that people are our most important asset and that we need to safeguard their health and safety," reports Health and Safety Manager Robbie Hazel. He adds that they have used the current legislation and the Nosa 5 star system which incorporate the legal minimum safety standards to achieve these milestones. "We had to get the buy in from all our resources to ensure that this safety programme is a success," reports Project Manager Arie de Blom.
The main challenges for the team to achieve this record were to identify, evaluate, monitor and control all hazards and risks continuously as well as to motivate staff to comply with the programme. Siemens teams have also been working on the Hwange power station where they were awarded the Station Manager's Health and Safety Merit Certificate for exceptional performance this year and on Hendrina powerstation where they reached 300 000 accident-free hours in 1997.
