In the past, driving LCDs directly from industrial PCs or single board computers (SBCs) has been difficult. One often had to purchase the LCD, LCD cable, inverter and compatible VGA BIOS from different sources, says industrial computer supplier, Centurion Micro Electronics.
Advantech is now offering a range of LCD kits that combine all of this into one package. That is, the LCD - ranging from 6,4" (16,3 cm) to 17" (43,2 cm) - the inverter and a matching interface cable that connects to the selected SBC's LCD output connector. A simple selection in the SBC BIOS is all that is needed to light up the LCD.
The interface can be parallel (18-bit TTL) or high-speed serial (LVDS). In both cases, the display information is kept digital. This eliminates the buttons used to set display position, contrast, etc. Keeping the display information digital results in no loss of picture quality, which is a further benefit.
The display is manufactured either by AUO (the largest LCD manufacturer in Taiwan) or Mitsubishi, another well-known LCD manufacturer. Some LCDs are available with an optional touch screen integrated onto the LCD. Pictured alongside are the 6,4" (16,3 cm) and 12,1" (30,7 cm) LCDs from Advantech. Centurion Micro Electronics is able to help customers match the LCDs to various SBCs, which includes selecting the correct interface cable.
