Economical ultrasonic flowmeters

November 2005 Flow Measurement & Control

The SiteLab SL1188 ultrasonic flowmeter from C&F Technologies of Randburg is suitable for surveying large facilities such as manufacturing sites, power stations, mines, breweries and hospitals. The meter, which is non-invasive, uses ultrasound for the accurate measurement of flow and energy efficiency in a variety of locations.

The Model SL1188 ultrasonic flowmeter is an effective alternative to magnetic, vortex, differential pressure, and other types of flow meters used in industry and the water/wastewater treatment and distribution fields. Although this flowmeter was designed principally for clean liquid applications, the instrument is tolerant of liquids with small amounts of gas/air bubbles or suspended solids found in most industrial environments. SiteLab has used the advanced IC and microprocessor technology and timing circuit (0,01 nanoseconds), which gives the SL1188 the advantage of high-precision, high reliability and low cost.

The SL1188 flowmeters are suitable for liquids having velocities of 0 to 12 m/s and can be applied to any standard pipe with diameters ranging from 25 mm to 5 m with or without lining material. All measurements are undertaken non-invasively, the sensors are simply clamped onto the outside of the pipe, and this means no down-time, no damage to existing pipelines and no maintenance costs. The fixed unit version can be supplied with temperature sensors in order to monitor energy flows.

The built-in bluetooth module using wireless communication technology provides the SL1188P portable unit's connection between transmitter and PDA. If unshielded, the communication distance can be up to 10 m. An added bonus is that the PDA can serve as a personal digital assistant when not being used for measurement. All measured data can be totalised and stored in the internal data logger and then transferred to a PC where it is analysed using the supplied graphic software.

Significant savings in time and money can be made by regularly checking the state and effectiveness of pumps and valves without having to shut down and remove any equipment. The SiteLab ultrasonic clamp-on flowmeter offers process personnel a way to monitor quality, reduce downtime, and set known survey quantities to ensure that the production process runs smoothly and efficiently.
