Level Measurement & Control

Bulk solids level measurement

November 2005 Level Measurement & Control

Until recently, radar has been the widely accepted standard measuring technology for reliable measurement in liquids, only. This non-contact measuring principle combines reliability with easy handling in a variety of applications.

With continuous measurement of solids, however, compromises often have to be made. Extreme conditions such as dust, filling noise, mechanical loads and difficult installation conditions often cause unreliable measuring results or even complete blackout of the measurement.

These weaknesses and inadequacies became a thing of the past with the introduction of the Vega radar sensor for bulk solids. The Vegapuls 68 combines the advantages of radar measurement technology with the special requirements of bulk solids measurement.

This sensor is suitable for application in the power generating industry. Installed in a blast furnace, it is not influenced by temperature or by the changing gas composition. A special version is available where the horn antenna comes with connections for nitrogen purging.

For measurement of coal or coke, the Vegapuls 68 remains unaffected by dust (it comes with Dust Ex approval) and the antenna can be cleaned by air purging. A special version is available where the horn or parabolic antenna is mounted on a swivelling holder.

With Vega's new radar technology, level measurement of bulk solids has become a reality. The Vegapuls 68 can process signals up to a thousand times smaller than those normally handled by a conventional radar instrument. This high sensitivity enables measuring ranges up to 70 metres, even in products with poor reflection characteristics.
