I/O card for rugged environments

October 2005 PLCs, DCSs & Controllers

Advantech high-density PCI-1758U series that features 128 channels are designed for large and demanding applications. The PCI-1758UDI offers 128 inputs, the PCI-1758UDO has 128 outputs, and PCI-1758UDIO is a combination card with its 64 outputs and 64 inputs. The PCI-1758U cards also offer several new functions to improve reliability, signal quality and programming flexibility.

"The PCI-1758U cards are bringing down the cost per I/O channel in the market," said Junwei Hsu, product manager at Advantech. "Each year sees an increase in the number of channels used in our customers' applications. At the same time, fewer slots are now available as more functions are being added. The PCI-1758U cards deliver the density required by some of the machinery roadmaps we have seen."

Designed to be used in industrial environments, the outputs are equipped with a watchdog timer, so in the event of a software failure, the outputs can be individually set to safe states. There is also a programmable power-up status function to ensure safe output values when the system is powered on. These output values can be set individually. Reliable operation is also aided by the isolation protection, which can withstand up to 2500 V d.c.

Each digital input channel provides an interrupt function. The trigger type can be set with the rising edge and falling edge registers. If the interrupt request signal occurs, software will service these interrupt requests by ISR. A digital filter eliminates data noise on input channels by blocking pulses that are shorter than the specified timing interval and passing pulses that are twice as long.

With a universal PCI bus, the PCI-1758U series supports both traditional 5 V systems and newer 3,3 V systems, and the built-in BoardID DIP switch helps define each card's unique ID when multiple cards are installed on the same PC chassis. The PCI-1758U series is available for Windows 98/2000/XP with full support for drivers.
