We will overcome

October 2005 News

It is great to see companies and individuals overcome personal challenges with enthusiasm and aplomb. Recently a couple of companies worked together to make a difference - Eskom's Peaking Generation office in Durbanville, outside of Cape Town in South Africa, and IDC Technologies, an international, technical training company.

On 27 and 28 July Rodney Jacobs, an engineering specialist in instrumentation, automation and process control and one of IDC's top instructors, presented a workshop entitled Best Practice in Process, Electrical and Instrumentation Drawings and Documentation, to a group of Peaking Generation engineers and technicians on site.

Rodney made haste to contact IDC, on completion of the two-day course. Not because he wanted to share the very positive responses from the 11 delegates who attended (which were impressive), but because something out of the ordinary occurred which made the experience exceptional.

One of the delegates on the workshop, Miss Angela Hohne, was unable to hear Rodney because of deafness. Peaking Generation had, however, provided an interpreter for her and the two of them made a great team. They kept up at all times with Rodney making only minor concessions to facilitate her learning. She contributed, not only during the presentation of theory, with the associated plethora of technical terms, but participated enthusiastically during the practical sessions.

It is heartening to see a company go to some lengths to make its workplace inclusive with equal opportunities available to those that make a commitment in the pursuit of excellence. This commitment is particularly impressive, being pursued, as it is, with a more daunting daily challenge for Angela than it is for many others.

Well done Angela, Peaking Generation and IDC. Here is to teamwork and a brighter future; where minority groups are more sensitively considered and more generously facilitated.
