Turck is offering AC, self-contained flow monitors that use a single, fully encapsulated sensing probe to monitor the flow of gases and liquids in industrial processes. They have no mechanical moving parts that can be gummed or clogged during various processes. Successful applications using these sensors include: monitoring coolant or lubricant flow in industrial processes, run-dry protection for conveyor pumps, coolant in motors and drives, and the detection of filter blockage in wastewater treatment applications. These flow monitors feature fast response to flow changes (typically 2 seconds), and a high degree of accuracy without a pressure drop during operation. The sensors are omni-directional (monitor flow in either direction), and designed with superior temperature compensation for switching accuracy. Their acceptable temperature gradient, 250°C/minute, is 15 times higher than that of similar flow devices. Turck flow monitors also offer high input repeatability. Their design uses the calorimetric principle (heat transport/heat loss process) to detect the presence of liquid or gas flow, within a specified velocity range, which provides repeatability of +2% regardless of flow speed.
The self-contained AC devices require 230 V a.c. supply voltage (115 V a.c. optional) for operation, and also provide a relay output. Other models are available with solid state or analog output. Constructed with a compact hardened plastic housing and stainless steel probe, these durable sensors meet IP67 standards. They offer pressure resistance to 10 MPa, and withstand aggressive materials found in industrial environments.

Editor's Choice Flow Measurement & Control
There are many processes where it is undesirable for the load to suddenly change quickly, for example in the paper industry. Examples of level control have involved reasonably fast tuning. An example of a level loop tuned this way and responding to a step change in setpoint is given.
