SABS award for magnetic test bench

August 2005 News

The Magnetic Test Bench is one of 16 product designs that received an SABS disa Design Excellence Award at a gala function held at Gallagher Estate recently. The products spanned a variety of industrial sectors such as engineering, mining and machinery, as well as medical, homeware and information technology. This award scheme is an initiative of the SABS Design Institute.

The Magnetic Test Bench is an avionics test apparatus used to calibrate and verify mechanical and electronic aircraft compasses and compass components before they are installed in aircraft. The compass or compass component to be evaluated is held in a stationary position while a magnetic field, similar to the earth's magnetic field, is generated and rotated around the compass, simulating an aircraft compass swing procedure. The product consists of a specialised coil system for the cancellation of the earth's geomagnetic field and for the generation of a user-specified magnetic field, a three-axis fluxgate background magnetometer, a microprocessor with application-specific software, a data acquisition card, voltage-to-current analog electronics, a power supply and a user interface. The disa Design Excellence Awards aim to recognise the achievements of South African product designers, while also encouraging local product design and manufacture and promoting international competitiveness of local products. This award scheme has established a proud tradition of promoting indigenous design.
