PLCs, DCSs & Controllers

Relieving the PLC's burden

July 2005 PLCs, DCSs & Controllers

The Ascon's deltadue series allows users to obtain PID control in a PLC (or PC-based) system in a simple way and without compromising the performances and the speed of the PLC. Process control engineers count on universal inputs/outputs, input/output isolation, autotune, PID algorithms reducing overshoots and heater/sensor break alarms, normally not available in the PLCs. Valuable PLC memory can be dedicated only to the digital processing, thereby improving the PLC's scan times. PLC processor can be downsized, partially unused multiple channel modules and I/O cards can be eliminated and no additional PLC programming is necessary. The cost of the system is reduced and the start-up simplified.

Now, with the deltadue series, integration of PLC systems with PID Control and I/O Modules is easy and can give additional advantages such as: common HMI, hot swapping, easy offline configuration and parameterisation, back up of the module data, auto-configuration of replaced modules. The deltadue series includes single and dual loop controllers, single and dual loop analog acquisition/transmitters with thresholds, digital I/O and the optional 'Manager' for interfacing with Profibus DP, CANopen, DeviceNet and Modbus systems. Each module is independent and can be used as a single loop controller or in a cluster of up to 62 modules for multiloop control and/or data acquisition. The modules can work as standalone units or integrated in a PLC system. DIN rail mounting, reduced dimensions, common power supply and communications bus for easy wiring and mounting side by side complete the features of the series. The picture shows the deltadue series of I/O modules, process and temperature controllers, analog and digital I/O modules, transmitters with alarm thresholds - and Profibus DP/DeviceNet/ CANopen/Modbus fieldbus interfaces.

Michael Brown Control Engineering Editor's Choice PLCs, DCSs & Controllers
Many process engineers do not appreciate the importance of flow loops in their unit controls. A senior process engineer once told me that flow loops need not be tuned well, as they generally have little effect on the more important and much slower loops like temperatures and pressures.
