Magnetic flowmeter with adhesion diagnostics technology

July 2005 Flow Measurement & Control

Yokogawa has developed the new ADMAG AXF series, believed to be the world's first magnetic flowmeter with electrode adhesion diagnostics technology. This new magnetic flowmeter with electrode coating diagnostics and 75 Hz/160 Hz dual frequency excitation.

Today's magmeters allow precise and reliable measurement of almost all process media: chemically aggressive, highly viscous, explosive, sticky and abrasive. While previous ADMAG meters with dual frequency excitation - for example the AE series - were successfully used in the chemical, pharmaceutical, food and beverage and pulp and paper industries, the new AXF series also offers a built-in digital process diagnostic tool.

The AE series has already been used for a long time and with great success in critical flow applications and problem liquids - even under unfavourable installation conditions. Whether the instrument was used in the production of stainless steel and exposed to strong vibrations or in the manufacturing process of thermal paper with piston pump driven pulsating flows - the dual frequency of the ADMAG family always ensured a high degree of zero stability, fastest response time and stable output signal of high accuracy. With its dual frequency of 75 Hz/160 Hz the AXF is able to reduce error signals by a factor of 2,5 (>6 dB). Those error signals are especially prevalent in slurries and liquids with suspended solids impacting on the electrodes. The AXF-series automatically compensates for internal and external errors. Empty-pipe situations can be detected (Empty-Pipe-Detection).

Some of the AXF-series' new features are electrode-coating detection and its appropriate status alarm, removable electrodes starting > DN15 (1/2") size meters, increased compensation of error signals (fluid/noise detection) by >6 dB, the ability to measure liquids with a conductivity of as low as 100 µS/m. AXF magmeters are customised via a multilingual menu-driven display interface with optical infrared setting switches. All instrument outputs conform to NE43.
