The Siko range of Magline magnetic length measuring systems includes the Macro, designed specifically to measure long lengths up to 160 m, with either incremental or absolute position registration. Available from Instrotech, the systems are suitable for use in warehousing, conveyor or materials handling applications. Digital signal outputs allow data transmission of the measured values via standard interfaces to a display unit or a master control with a resolution as fine as 1 mm.
A flexible steel band with ferromagnetic film is the essential component of the Macro series. The incremental design requires a band magnetised with north and south polarity at equal intervals. The absolute measurement method makes use of a special band with an absolute code. This system will maintain calibration even if adjustments are made while power is off.
A sensor is traversed along the measuring band for the measuring and position registration and in this way the path information is scanned - contactless, and thus wear-free. In this approach intervals and tolerances as small as 4 mm are achievable.
The position information movement direction information is derived from the measurement signals and these may be displayed directly on site (with magnetic display) or relayed via the customary interfaces to the control and regulation systems for further processing. The interface permits connection to virtually any industrial control system.
