Single client orders 6000 temperature assemblies

June 2005 News

Endress+Hauser has supplied more than 6000 industrial assemblies, ranging from thermowells, resistance temperature detectors, thermocouples, tube skins and solid Stellite thermowells to industrial multipoint assemblies to probably the largest oil refinery in the world. Mostly related to temperature measurement, the mammoth contract was won against stiff worldwide competition.

Reflecting the high levels of service and quality that led to Endress+Hauser winning this contract, Endress+Hauser South Africa now offers an increased range of temperature products to complement its full range of measurement technologies.

"We supply temperature-engineered products with sensors and thermowells in a wide selection of materials, for example ceramic, hastelloy, titanium, tantalum and all grades of stainless steel," says applications engineer, Ben White. "Sensors from as small as 0,5 mm diameter are available in single, duplex and triplex construction and are offered with up to 30-way multipoint assemblies."

Endress+Hauser supplies a worldwide client base throughout the oil and gas, petrochemical and chemical industries. It is in this sphere that Endress+Hauser's design capability, certification, DNV type approval, PED approval and ISO 9001 conformity is an obvious advantage.

Applications once specified accuracies of ±1°C or 2°C for temperature devices. Now, with the high cost of energy, improved technology and increased critical process applications, accuracies of ±0,01°C are regularly requested. As process automation continues to advance, the devices that monitor such critical parameters will increasingly be relied upon. In order to increase the lifespan of such essential devices as thermocouples and resistance thermometer insets, thermowells need to be provided. When designed correctly, thermowells also have the power to increase reliability and safety of the sensors.

In every process, the protective thermowells are subject to varying amounts of wear and tear, dependent upon the process conditions. Therefore, it is often difficult to guarantee a specific lifetime, particularly in critical high pressure and corrosive applications. However, Endress+Hauser employs high manufacturing and design standards in an attempt to combat this problem, eg, NACE certification, welding documents etc.

Endress+Hauser's flexible approach and expertise extends to a 24-hour emergency service for any specially manufactured sensor and the ability to prepare special drawings within hours of an enquiry. "All our products are backed up by our technical expertise, experience of installed base management and all the required certification and documentation," says White. The temperature sensor illustrated is one of 6000 components supplied by Endress+Hauser.
