Afriwater to provide solutions to equitable access to water issues
May 2005
News
As controversy and debate continue to rage around the issue of how best to bring about equitable access to water in South Africa, the full extent and complexity of the project that lies ahead is slowly being realised. The Finance Minister's budget only confirmed the growing emphasis on and importance of finding solutions - Trevor Manuel increased the equitable share for municipalities - an unconditional grant used mainly to fund current costs of services such as water, sanitation and refuse removal - by R3,7 billion over the budget's three-year period. The municipal infrastructure grant, used to put in place infrastructure for basic services, was increased by R1,7 billion. The main priority for this grant will be to introduce modern sanitation facilities to poor communities.
Companies watching the debate from the centre seats are only too aware of the opportunities that will present themselves as solutions are identified and implementation begins. And they are readying themselves for the roles that they might play in these projects. A fact only reinforced by the most recent developments on the Afriwater 2005 exhibition.
Taking place at the Sandton Convention Centre from 10-12 August 2005, the largest water, waste and environment exhibition of its kind in South Africa already has the support of industry leaders - BiWater; BEP Bestobell; the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry; Erwat; Howden Pumps/Denorco; Johannesburg Water; Magalies Water; Merck; NCP Chlorchem; Radio Detection; Rand Water; Saint-Gobain Pipelines; Siemens; Sud-Chemie; TCTA (Trans Caledon Tunnel Authority); Umgeni Water; and WISA are just a few of the companies and organisations that will be there to discuss possible ways forward.
Afriwater is collocated with the IWA Diffuse Pollution Specialist Conference and the Conference on Sustainable Management of Residues Emanating from Waste and Wastewater Treatment. On-line registration is at www.iwa-wisa-2005.com - or call Anne Biddlecombe at the Water Institute of South Africa on 011 254 4800.
