Versatile, modular measuring system

April 2005 Data Acquisition & Telemetry Surveillance Products & Solutions

For process optimisation, it is often necessary to monitor various parameters simultaneously. Consequently, Testo has designed a unique multifunctional control unit that can link up to 20 four-channel dataloggers and can measure various parameters at the same time.

Product quality can be achieved by monitoring and controlling the different parameters used in the production process. However, each monitored parameter requires a different measuring instrument. Additionally, loggers often only store data of one parameter. As a result, this procedure can often be cumbersome and costly.

Testo has introduced a modular system that can measure many different parameters, in one or many locations, and log up to 200 measuring channels simultaneously. This multifunctional control system can have up to 20 four-channel dataloggers, each capable of logging up to 250 000 readings, which can be connected directly to each other or via a bus cable for remote access. Therefore, process optimisation can be attained using one unit.

The Testo 454 modular system operates from a central unit that displays the measured data and controls the measured parameters. It can be connected to a PC via the RS232 cable and comes with an integrated thermal printer.

This portable unit is a multifunctional reference instrument that can operate separately from the modular system. It can measure temperature, humidity, pressure, velocity, volume flow, CO, CO2, rpm, voltage and current. Additional parameters can also be saved in the control unit: locations, measurement programs, limit values, precision adjustments and system configuration.

The dataloggers are also capable of measuring and saving readings without being connected to the central unit of the modular system. Up to four different probes can be connected to each datalogger. Additional probe readings can be achieved by using more than one logger box in the modular system. Consequently, the versatile modular system is suitable for all kinds of applications: from monitoring one parameter to optimising a complete processing system with numerous parameters.
