An out-of-balance fan can cause a lot of damage to its surroundings, if it is not detected in time, this could include bearing failure, structural damage and production losses. Fitting a simple inexpensive mechanical switch onto the fan and wiring it to an alarm and/or trip can prevent damage from occurring. The Metrix 5550 Series is such a mechanical switch.
The unit is basically a mechanical armature assembly that operates a snap-action switch. Sensitivity adjustment is via an external set-point screw and the switch is reset by a manual plunger on the front. The frequency sensitivity of the 5550 switch is 0 to 3600 RPM, a wide enough range of fan-speed to cover essentially all applications. Full-scale vibration is 0-2g, 5g or 10gs. For special applications, options such as double-pole switches, hazardous area locations and remote electrical reset functions are available.
