Pneumatics helping to paint a bright future

April 2005 Pneumatics & Hydraulics Surveillance Products & Solutions

While painters appreciate the benefits of ready-to-use paints and varnishes, the production of these is a major challenge to the automation components concerned, with all the dust and dirt present in paint factories. This is, however, no problem for pneumatics. In the paint factory of Pinturas Taiamar in Chile, for example, pneumatic components, while not going so far as to wield a paintbrush, make a major contribution in terms of stirring the paints and filling and dosing them into cans.

Modern paints are made mainly from synthetic pigments and binding agents. A broad range of additives ensures that they are not only attractive but also offer protection against corrosion, infestations and UV radiation. Some of today's paints may even be self-cleaning. Particularly environmentally friendly are water-based, solvent-free paints, which are also produced by Pinturas Taiamar. This South American paint manufacturer is especially busy in the summer months. Due to the cold winter weather, the inhabitants of the Chilean capital city can take up their paintbrushes and rollers and decorate the outsides of their homes only in the summer months, which of course means an increased demand for materials. In order to meet this demand, it is absolutely vital to deploy reliable technology that keeps on going even when production is running at full stretch - any downtime would be very expensive.

Pneumatics expert, Festo, has helped Pinturas Taiamar discover how pneumatics can provide highly reliable automation solutions - leading to the adoption of these in preference to electrical components, thanks to their greater robustness. Pneumatics operates reliably even in the atmosphere of fine dust present in paint production and under continuous load. 2- and 3-way ball valves, controlled by pneumatic swivel drives, are used in particular for the mixing, dosing and filling of the paints and varnishes, which are - in certain cases - extremely viscous. The entire production plant runs almost by itself, with valve terminals, valves, a PLC and a fieldbus system controlling the flow of paints. Even in the busy summer season, therefore, the flow of product is assured - right down to the last brushstroke.
