Turbidimeter with bubble removal

April 2005 Flow Measurement & Control Fire & Safety

Lessons learnt from Hach's 45 years of experience in the field of turbidity were used to good effect in the design of the company's 1720E low range process turbidimeter. Built to measure turbidity from 0,001 to 100 NTU and meet USEPA 180.1 design and performance guidelines, its robust, proven design provides the sensitivity, accuracy, and stability to monitor low levels of turbidity, even in high-quality filtered water. A bubble removal system eliminates false high turbidity readings at low levels.

The controller can control two 1720E turbidimeters at the same time. This new Hach SC 100 controller from PREI Instrumentation can accept any two sensors - in a mix-and-match arrangement - to monitor turbidity, pH, ORP, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, suspended solids or nitrate. Analog sensors can also be connected to the controller via a digital gateway. Each 1720E turbidity analyser carries its own identification, and is plugged into the controller without any configuration being necessary. All ranging and calibration data is stored in the 1720E analyser. Analysers can now be calibrated offsite and then connected to the controller in the field. The controller can also be replaced in the field without losing the data or having to recalibrate the system.

A significant feature of this new 1720E turbidity analyser is its ability to communicate and control (PID) via 4 to 20 mA and digital MODBUS/RS485/RS232, ProfiBus DP, Ethernet, Foundation Fieldbus, and it has an infrared port for data download to a palm top. A built-in datalogger collects measurement data, calibration, verification points, and alarm history for up to six months. By using a common standard controller, installation and maintenance is simplified, training and stock holding is reduced.
