Water and process industry control systems

April 2005 PLCs, DCSs & Controllers

Sensor boxes that provide a reliable position feedback function, particularly with swivel drives in the field of water/waste-water treatment, and a local controller for opening and closing main valves on a manual basis, are among the new solutions supplied by Festo South Africa in integrated process control systems.

The robust DAPZ sensor boxes and DLP-VSE local controller are accompanied by the company's ball valves, which complement the Festo COPAR drive series and can be fitted together with these without the need for any additional adapters or couplings. COPAR swivel drives and COPAC linear cylinders are robust, need no maintenance and feature enhanced corrosion resistance.

Festo has also launched its CPX intelligent valve terminals with Ethernet interface, TCP/IP protocol, and optimal PLC components that allow previously manually operated valve actuators to be actuated via intelligent actuation. Even remotely located systems and valve actuators can be conveniently controlled and monitored with error diagnosis included. This provides a reliable system solution, which ensures the uninterrupted operation of critical systems - which is essential in the process industry.

A wide range of engineering software for drives and controls is offered. The free-of-charge Aircon software, for example, enables planners and designers to calculate the required compressed air volume on the basis of a valve actuator type and its function within the system. This is how optimally configured compressed air networks, which ensure the reliable functioning of pneumatics, are created.

The Festo systems engineering facility is available to integrate this complete system of field components, networks, controls and scada. Other services forming the framework that supports the products are logistics, pre-assembly, component customisation, installation, maintenance and SETA approved training.

For some years now, Festo has been continually expanding its harmonised, standard-compliant automation range with solutions for the process industry. The combination of industry-specific components and standard pneumatics produces an interesting solution concept that reflects all stages of the value creation chain - from raw material processing through to the filling and packaging of finished products. The focus here is always on a perfect symbiosis of compressed air, drive, valve and control technology for customised solutions.
