Umgeni Water, a bulk water supplier in KwaZulu-Natal, has recently installed approximately 40 NewElec MA relays as part of its protection upgrade programme in Pietermaritzburg. The main concern was for the relays to communicate via their established Modicon PLCs that require a Modbus protocol. Together with a local systems integrator, working with Amandla Electrotechnology and NewElec, the client's requirements were fulfilled.
Umgeni Water was impressed with the user-friendly manner in which the motor protection relay annunciated faults as well as the diverse range of protection features that were built into the relay, including the earth-leakage sensing core. Umgeni Water plans on upgrading more of its existing panels in the near future.
