Accreditation - key for learnership providers
March 2005
News
The importance of using an accredited provider to implement learnerships cannot be over-emphasised. That is according to Dennis Lamberti, the development director of adult education company, Media Works.
Media Works' learnership material has just received provisional accreditation from two of the Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs). Both the Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services Seta, MERSETA, and the Chemical Industries Education and Training Authority, CHIETA, have provisionally certified Media Works' NQF Level 1 learnership material.
Media Works Bloemfontein's branch manager, Marika Venter, says, "There is a dire need for NQF Level 1 learnerships at MERSETA sites in the Free State and Northern Cape, yet there is an enormous shortage of accredited providers. We were extremely happy to go through the accreditation process in order to provide MERSETA with an accredited provider that it could use to implement learnerships in this region."
For almost two years, Media Works has been partnering MERSETA in an initiative to assist small, medium and micro (SMME) enterprises in addressing the literacy and numeracy shortcomings of their workforce. To date, Media Works has achieved a 90% pass rate at SMMEs falling under the MERSETA's various sectors, which include the metal and engineering, auto manufacturing, motor retail and components, new tyre and plastics industries.
CHIETA has also awarded Media Works provisional accreditation for the SAQA registered qualification, National Certificate in Chemical Operations at NQF Level 1. This means that Media Works may now operate as an approved provider for the above-mentioned qualification for two years, or until the Unit Standard falls away, whichever is the shorter period.
Since 2003, Media Works has been assisting CHIETA to implement adult basic education and training at SMMEs that fall under the SETA.
Lamberti expressed his satisfaction with the accreditation, saying that there were too many non-accredited providers in the industry. He added, "While the path to accreditation is not an easy one, it is well worth the effort. Companies looking to implement training are well advised to choose accredited providers to ensure that their employees are exposed to the best possible learning programmes as well as being able to access their skills levies."
