In a good example of the strong working relationship between Endress+Hauser and Eskom, the instrumentation supplier has achieved full SABS accreditation on its Coriolis flowmeters for custody transfer applications, using an Eskom test rig for the appraisal procedure.
"After submitting the full specifications and European PTB, NMI and OMIL certificates to the SABS department of Legal Metrology, they requested to witness a 5-point calibration verification test," Endress+Hauser marketing manager, Grant Joyce, recalls. "This meant that we needed to install this meter in a line where the flow rates could be varied from 0 to 800 tons per hour."
After discussions with Eskom TSI at its SANAS accredited flow rig, Ferdi Liebenberg agreed to assist. In order to meet the low and high flow rates, two separate lines had to be built. A 150 mm and a 250 mm line (with reducer) were used to obtain the necessary flow range from 32 to 500 tons per hour. A total of 27 batches were run over a period of four days. The low flows from 32 up to 135 tons per hour were run in batch size of 5 tons each, and the higher flows 300 to 500 tons per hour were run in batch sizes of 200 tons.

The extensive tests undertaken on the Eskom test rig were witnessed by a representative of the Advisory Committee associated with the Trade Metrology Department of the South African Bureau of Standards. Results were within the requirements of the Bureau for use in Custody Transfer applications, and type approval for the meter was awarded. The certificate issued confirms that the type of meter tested conforms to the requirements of the SABS for legal metrology.
Following accreditation, a major local petroleum refinery has purchased 16 of these Coriolis meters for custody transfer applications.
