Germiston-based company Rand Refinery has won the Southern African Maintenance Association (SAMA) Gold Award 2004, sponsored by Rockwell Automation.
Created to uplift the status of the maintenance practitioner in southern Africa, the Section 21 organisation uses the prestigious award as incentive for people and organisations that excel in the maintenance environment. Each site invited to take part in the audit process received a pre-audit questionnaire to determine its suitability for adjudication, following which, a team of ISO 9001-2000 accredited auditors were sent out to the site to actively assess various parameters over a period of two days.
"The audit process has recently been calibrated against its Australian counterpart to ensure that it remains world-class, and we have audited two Australian companies during that process. At present, the association is looking for similar partnerships with our European counterparts to continue reviewing the process," said SAMA president, Dr Amadi-Echendu.

"The foremost objective of SAMA is to participate and assist in uplifting the maintenance profession in southern Africa (and beyond its borders). For SAMA to have Rockwell Automation as a contribution partner/sponsor in this (by Rockwell Automation itself being a major player, locally and internationally, in the maintenance and asset care commerce), is surely a great privilege and assistance in SAMA's quest towards its focal objective. Furthermore, being able to note Rockwell Automation on the Maintenance Excellence Award trophy as the Gold sponsor of this event signifies this respected and well-regarded partnership."
Forty-one representatives from audit-participating companies, sponsors, presidential awards and guests attended the gala event, including representatives from the ICAMM '04 - 45 and maintenance professionals from Australia and the USA.
