Valves, Actuators & Pump Control

Actuators for many applications

December 2004 Valves, Actuators & Pump Control

Proportional control of pneumatic actuators is an area that SMC believes it has provided a solution for just about every application. Its proportional control instruments cover a range that includes linear as well as rotary pneumatic actuators.

The standard type linear positioner, series IP200, is especially appropriate for remote positioning or stroke regulation of dose units, pumps, gears, drives, velocities, proportional apertures of valves and many more applications. The smooth action of SMC cylinders, in combination with the positioner system, leads to high precision and accuracy. This repeatability, as well as the hysteresis, in reference to the total cylinder capacity, is less than 1%. The 20 to 100 kPa signal pressure acts directly on the servo positioning system, in such a way that a modification or change in this pressure is transformed immediately into a movement of the piston. The positioner is so designed that zero point and span adjustment is easy and simple. Standard strokes are available up to a maximum of 500 mm and anything in between. A special option of Viton seals is also available for use in high heat areas.

Where the linear positioner may be exposed to excessive vibration, causing 'hunting', SMC offers the solution of a rotary positioner fitted with a linear cam. This positioner has the advantage of being fitted with the electro-pneumatic regulator within the unit. It comes mounted on SMC cylinders with diameters ranging from 40 to 300 mm and strokes up to a maximum of 700 mm. The rotary positioners may either be pneumatically or electrically controlled and have the option of lever or rotary cam type. Where a failsafe system is required, the unit can be fitted with the necessary components to allow the actuator to stroke open or closed if air pressure drops, electrical power fails or the signal is lost.

All of SMCs pneumatic positioners can be controlled manually, locally or remotely, through its range of precision regulators or electrically through its I/P or E/P regulators. A range of different input signal options is available for SMC's electro-positioners.
