NewElec has designed an earth insulation lockout relay to prevent motor starts when an inherent earth leakage fault is present. The product was designed as a result of problems encountered by manufacturing plants operating in humid coastal conditions, such as in the sugar industry, hosing down of motors, for example, in abattoirs, and when operating stand-by equipment that is seldom used.
The protection package comprises the relay itself, an 11-pin plug-in base and a three-phase choke. The product can be used regardless of the starter configuration and measures the insulation integrity of the feeder cable cores as well as the motor windings to earth while the motor is standing. When the protection relay measures an insulation failure, the main contactors will be prevented from closing the circuit.
The selected lockout relay model determines the acceptable insulation level, while the fused measuring circuit protects the relay against inadvertent damage due to incorrect connections.
