Awards presented to Siemens distributors and system integrator partners at the Cyber Junkyard event

Best Micro Automation Project for 2004 - Abacus Automation (Warren Scott)

In conjunction with Siemens a GPRS environmental alarm system was developed. The system uses the S7200 as a front-end data gatherer, where the integrated digital, analog and freeport comms ports are used to interface to field equipment.

A driver has been developed which then allows the S7200 PLC to log on to the GPRS network server. Data can then be transferred to a scada PC or another PLC on the network. By linking the scada to the Internet, sites from anywhere in the world can be linked to the scada. Successful tests were performed from America and Germany to a PC based in South Africa.

Innovation Award for 2004 - Abacus Automation (Warren Scott)

In order to ensure continued development of new unique solutions, it has been decided by Siemens to start an annual Best Innovation Award.

Best TIA Project - Hestico (Charles Glieman)

The project comprised of a totally integrated automation system for 30 plastic injection moulding machines, comprising of standard components with no proprietary systems, and no black boxes from an international vendor with good local support structures.

On each machine a new control system was specified comprising of:

* 2 x S7 400 CPUs.

* ASI Input modules for safety related functions.

* ET200S range of I/O for the analog and digital I/O.

* MP370 HMI for local machine control also linked to the Ethernet network so it could become a thin client.

* Siemens switchgear.

* The Micromaster 440 variable speed drive

* Teleservice functionality for remote diagnostics.

* Centralised WINCC controls centre linked into all 30 machines.

Best S7-300/400 Project - SMS (Paul Mulder)

Being a site that had no previous automation system, Tselentis Colliery was very anti-automation.

After several proposals, the site engineer decided on a solution with an S7-300 PLC system connected to a WinCC scada. The project took six months to complete, as there was an ever increasing awareness of what the automation could do for the mine, and so the scope grew nearly daily, before settling on the final solution. The total project value was around R700 000, and with an increased production (19% per day on average) due to less downtime, better control and improved reporting, the project cost was repaid in three months. Before leaving site, all previous systems were swapped out for S7-300 hardware and other than for the electrical switchgear (the client had adopted a standard already), the whole site is based on Siemens automation systems.

Best PCS7 Project - AST (Ricky Huyser)

Sappi Usutu had an already existing PCS 7 V4 installation on the drying plant. The challenge was to upgrade to the latest PCS 7 version, while ensuring minimum downtime. The software needed to be upgraded, along with certain Profibus networks and other hardware, due to previous design inconsistencies by another company.

Best Marketing Efforts for 2004 by a channel partner - VNF Technologies (Frank da Silva)

Best budget growth achievement by a System Integrator for 2004 - Civet Engineering (Chris Bockle)

Best budget growth achievement by a Process Instrumentation Distributor for 2004 - Titan Technology
