Dust monitors with a difference

November 2004 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring Information Security

The dust monitor range, developed by Oldham, has several advantages that will help ease the process of monitoring the safety of a work environment. The EP300 series can detect particles from 0,1 mg/m³ and up.

This Oldham series uses an automatic set-up procedure, which calculates the best sensitivity compared to the dust concentration. The EP300 has a unique method to detect dust particles, through the physical phenomenon of triboelectricity. When two different materials come into contact, that is to say they rub against each other, it is likely that one will attract more electrons than the other. From the study of chemistry we have learnt that different materials have different needs for electrons. Some materials are more insatiable than others and will take electrons from any object they come into contact with, while others are more willing to give up electrons.

Triboelectricity has been used for more than 20 years, to determine dust emissions. Today it is considered to be one of the most reliable and economical instruments for dust emission monitoring available on the market.

Whenever dust is detected, a signal is received through a monitor and analysed in a 16 bit microcontroller where an average value is determined. The right range is then selected and shifted at the same time as the particle concentration. The monitor always follows the changes in the dust concentration and shifts the range accordingly. The monitors use the triboelectric effect: when particles come into contact with the sensor probe a small amount of electrical charge is transferred and then converted to a dust emission signal.

* The signal gives continuous information on the mass flow of solid particles from 100 mg/m³.

* The dust monitor series consists of mainly two different monitors, the EP301 and 302, with the EP303 and D400 optional.

EP301

This monitor, designed for filter bag leak detection, is equipped with two independent alarm relays for: early warning and failure, detection of filter deterioration, filter blockage or breakage and process control (as an on/off system).

The response time of the EP301 is short, so it enables early detection and prevention of expensive product loss to the environment. It is easy to install and use and no user configuration is needed. Relays can be used in two modes: normally open (NO) or normally closed (NC).

EP302

This is a trend monitor with an advanced algorithm, which provides trends in dust emissions and filter performance. Like the EP301 it has two independent alarm relays, as well as a 4-20 mA analog signal output, ideal for trend monitoring. It has the ability to monitor the filter performances and the particulate emissions. Two relays will energise when the amount of particulates in the gas stream exceeds a preset level. In certain applications the EP302 can be used for process control. This monitor will help the operator learn more about his process and plan maintenance in advance, before filter breakage. Both the EP301 and the EP302 are designed for use in any process where indicative monitoring is required.

The series could be used in industries such as: cement manufacturing, chemical processing, metals industry, pharmaceutical industry, mineral drying, food and tobacco, rubber compounding, animal feed processing, power plants, and waste incinerators. The EP300 has an easy, automatic set-up procedure.

EP303: (optional) is an emission monitor for stack monitoring when calibration of mg/m³ is required with RS485.

D400: (optional) is a remote digital display, which is applicable to EP302 and EP303.

Dustlog

For effortless data logging and reporting Oldham has designed the Dustlog, which is an optional extra with the use of the EP301 and 302. Dustlog is specialised software complete with A/D converter and cable for data collection and reporting. It includes everything needed for handling emission data with an ordinary computer. It is Windows compatible, easy to configure, has up to 10 channels and adjustable settings. The alarm levels can be adjusted with ease for different applications.
