Master for CANopen networks

October 2004 PLCs, DCSs & Controllers

IFM Electronic's Ecomat 100 range has introduced a new mobile controller for use in vehicles and mobile machines. The SmartController may be used as an intelligent I/O module or CANopen master and also provides a gateway for SAE J 1939 or ISO 11992 requirements.

The integrated CANopen interface enables a flexible and powerful extension of the system with further I/O modules. When using the two CAN interfaces, a freely programmable CAN gateway for coupling different networks is available. It supports all important bus protocols, enabling for example, easy exchange of SAE J 1939 engine data and CANopen data. Different transmission rates and the transparent or preprocessing exchange of data between the networks are supported. Inputs and outputs can be set via parameters. In addition to digital inputs, analog inputs for current or voltage, inputs with diagnostic capability and fast pulse inputs are also available.

The control module is fitted with two integrated CAN interfaces which enable easy implementation of gateway functions. Thus control and diagnostic data of diesel engines, can for example, be directly processed with the SAE J 1939 protocol. As an alternative, the second CAN interface can be rated according to ISO 11992.

Programming with the standard IEC 61131-3 languages enables the user clear and easy creation of the application software. For special hardware operation such as gateway J1939, function libraries are available which allow a direct integration into the software.

On the first CAN interface the controller supports the CANopen protocol that serves to transmit for example, data to decentralised input/output modules or a dialogue unit. The CANopen protocol also enables quick and flexible networking of the system components.

Meeting IP 67 requirements, the device is vibration and shock resistant, operates on 10-30 V d.c. in an ambient temperature range from -40°C to 85°C.
