Compact cylinder position sensors

November 2000 Sensors & Transducers

Turck is offering permaprox BIM cylinder position sensors to monitor the exact position of a cylinder piston. These new sensors are specifically designed for newer, compact cylinder housing styles.

The new sensors mount directly in the extruded groove or dovetail in the compact cylinder housing. Because different brands of cylinders have different groove designs, Turck has designed these new sensors and new mounting brackets to fit numerous cylinder designs and styles, permaprox BIM sensors can also clamp directly onto cylinder tie rods, eliminating the need for stainless steel brackets or slide rod mechanisms. These sensors work with cylinder models from Bimba, Compact Air Products, Fabco-Air, SMC, PHD, Bosch, Festo and Numatics, to name a few.

permaprox BIM cylinder sensors replace conventional cylinder positioning indicators such as flags, brackets, and other types of mechanical hardware, with sensors that mount directly on-board the cylinder and function without any physical contact with the cylinder piston. Benefits include simplified set-up, less space needed, reduced assembly costs, and significantly greater reliability. They also offer a direct replacement for less reliable mechanical limit switches and Reed and Hall effect switches that require adjustment and frequent replacement.

Unlike Reed switches and Hall effect switches sensors are not prone to detecting multiple switching points. They use a patented c-shaped ribbon of amorphous metal to pinpoint the exact location of the magnet in non-ferrous wall cylinders. They can also provide a precise switching point anywhere along the stroke. Because they are solid-state devices with no moving contacts (immunity to shock and vibration), these sensors also have virtually infinite life, where other technologies are much more prone to failure.

Numerous cylinders and sensors can be controlled simultaneously in highly automated machinery or production lines, using a PLC or computer, or in a device-level sensor/actuator bus network. The cylinder sensors are available in AC and DC versions, with short-circuit and overload protection, and NAMUR outputs for hazardous locations. Other options include weld-field immunity so the sensors won't false-trigger in the presence of extreme electromagnetic fields produced by resistance welding machines.
