MSM300 is a suspended solids measurement system from Dupleix Liquid Meters (DLM) manufactured by Solartron Mobrey. Comprising of a control unit and choice of infrared sensors, the system offers simple cost-effective measuring installation. Designed for use with low-density sludges up to 20 g/l (2% suspended solids), the system complements the company's popular MSM400 sludge density meter, completing the range for measurement up to 20% solids.
The system offers a solution suitable for the monitoring of final effluent discharge to ensure compliance with Environmental Agency regulations and meets other turbidity measurement applications on water and industrial processing sites including mixed liquor suspended solids, flocculent dosing and sludge density.
MSM300 sensor options include in-line versions for use in pipelines and a range of probes for measurement in settlement and other tanks. All the sensors are designed for simple installation and ease of maintenance, contributing significantly to life cycle cost-efficiency.
Unlike some competitive products, the IL in-line sensor does not require an additional pipe section. It is installed through a simple mounting boss into any pipeline of 65 mm diameter or larger and is available in a valved version that allows removal under pressure, for easy maintenance. The sensing element is positioned flush with the inside wall of the pipe, ensuring the optical surface is kept clean by the flow.
MSM300 LA and LS probes are designed for use in tanks. The LA version has a measurement range up to 20 g/l, for use in aeration systems, return activated sludge and mixed liquor systems. The LS sensor is for monitoring very low levels of suspended solids up to 500 mg/l, such as in final effluent. Both sensors feature an innovative self-cleaning system that automatically wipes any deposit from the optics by retracting them into the body of the sensor at user-defined intervals. In this way, the possibility of build-up is avoided to ensure continued measurement integrity.
The MSM300 control unit displays measured value and the status of the system. An easy-to-use menu structure with built-in programming wizards makes set-up and calibration intuitive so even new users typically find there is no need to refer to the instruction manual. System features include automatic logging of maximum and minimum values for a given time period and a password protection of the keypad to avoid the possibility of settings being altered in error. There is an analog output for connection to a PLC or other site monitoring system and two relays available for control or high, low or fault alarms.

Editor's Choice Flow Measurement & Control
There are many processes where it is undesirable for the load to suddenly change quickly, for example in the paper industry. Examples of level control have involved reasonably fast tuning. An example of a level loop tuned this way and responding to a step change in setpoint is given.
