Low-cost background suppression sensors

July 2004 Sensors & Transducers Infrastructure

Banner Engineering is offering its new World-Beam QS18FF background suppression sensors that are ready to use 'right out of the box'. Users can select from pre-programmed models for 50 or 100 mm fixed-field sensing ranges where the sensors will only detect objects within their pre-set sensing range and ignore all others outside the range regardless of the object's surface reflectivity. And, because the QS18FF sensors do not contain any adjustment pushbuttons, DIP switches or knobs, they are less at risk for any tampering or altering. Users simply mount the sensor so that the target will pass within the predefined sensing range and they are ready to begin operating.

Joe Dolinsky, technical manager for Banner's photoelectric products, says, "With a small form factor, convenient mounting options and low cost, this is an easy to apply solution for accurate sensing in confined applications such as on packaging or assembly equipment and small conveyors and feeder bowls - making it ideal for the semiconductor, pharmaceutical, packaging and material handling markets. A visible red spot generated by the sensor's high power output LED makes target positioning quick and easy by providing a visual confirmation of the exact target point to be sensed.

The QS8FF models share many of the same features and attributes that have made this product family so successful. These include 10 to 30 V d.c. supply voltage and the versatile and compact sealed 18 mm housing, which offers convenient mounting options via its threaded-nose - or side-mounting holes. These robust little sensors also feature excellent EMI, RFI and optical noise immunity, outputs are NPN or PNP and, LED status indication is visible from 360°, there are a wide assortment of mounting and protective brackets as well as a range of cable options including integral Pico-style and Euro-style quick-disconnect connectors.
