Mechatronics established as future trend

July 2004 Training & Education

Mechatronic practitioners are engaged in the assembly and maintenance of complex machines, plant and systems in the engineering sector or in organisations which purchase and operate such mechatronic systems.

Mechatronics, often described as the synergy of mechanical and electronic technologies, is increasingly being singled out as a core focus by both the education and business sectors. Recent examples can be found at Tshwane University of Technology and Port Elizabeth Technikon. Festo Didactic is actively aiding these institutions in this technology drive. "The vocational training and business sectors now recognise the benefits of mechatronic learning modules," reports Tom Webster, head of Festo Didactic. Multimedia and e-learning based training is used extensively in the training modules.

Festo Didactic provides material for almost every area of mechatronics learning, from machining and CNC technology to electrical engineering/electronics, handling technology, robotics, pneumatics, hydraulics and fieldbus technology. One of the company's first mechatronics successes in South Africa was the implementation of six modules of the company's modular production systems (MPS) by Daimler Chrysler South Africa in East London and Port Elizabeth Technikon. MPS can be used to simulate real-life industrial production equipment of varying complexity and is accompanied by software and textbooks covering the various aspects of mechatronics.

The Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services Sector Educational Training Authority (MERSETA) has awarded Festo Didactic full accreditations status for its range of hydraulic, pneumatic and programmable logic controller courses. Initiatives are on the way to introduce mechatronics into formal education with learnership, diploma and degree qualifications.
