High-end energy manager 'steams in'

June 2004 Temperature Measurement

Steam mass measurement, steam heat calculations and water heat differential measurement are the prime functions of Endress + Hauser's PreLine instrument family. Now the instrumentation specialist has added an energy manager that was specifically developed for industrial water and steam energy calculation.

The RMS621 energy manager is a high-end product that distinguishes itself through high flexibility and state-of-the-art technology. Using plug-in expansion cards, the number of inputs and outputs on the RMS621 can be configured to the optimum solution required by a specific application. Up to three expansion cards can be integrated into a base unit, allowing clients to manage several independent applications from a single device. For increased plant uptime, the system was designed to allow retrofitting of expansion cards while the energy manager is in operation.

The RMS621 can provide up to 10 analog, digital and temperature process value inputs, dependent on unit construction. Significantly, these may be set independently, and can also be assigned to more than one application in the unit. Measured values, as well as calculated results, can be retransmitted using two to 14 analog or digital outputs, or by means of the built-in RS232 interface. Up to seven relays are also available for alarm setpoint condition monitoring. IAPWS-IF97 - the latest international benchmark for industrial heat calculation - allows calculation of the energy values from flow, pressure and temperature inputs.

The device is a rail-mounted unit that can be operated using a rear illuminated dot matrix display and soft keys, or a built-in serial interface with ReadWin 2000. To assist in recognising alarm setpoint conditions, sensor faults or process values, the rear illumination can change colour from blue to red. A remote, panel-mounted display with the same functionality as the integrated display and soft keys, is also available. Easy set-up is further aided through on-line help and a quick setup feature. The picture shows the RMS621 display panel.
