Contracted by an international technology provider, system integrator, Associated Systems has completed the electrical and instrumentation installation of three clay gun machines at Lonmin Smelter/BMR Project in Rustenburg.
The contract brings the total to 13 such projects undertaken by the systems integration specialist. This recognised expertise has now led to a further order involving the revamp and PLC control system design of three clay gun machines at another platinum mine in Rustenburg.
Clay gun machines carry out the operation of drilling the tap holes on the smelter to allow for slag and material release. These holes are then re-plugged with clay. The Smelter/BMR project involved the revamping of two mud gun machines that were damaged in a furnace blast last year, as well as a new machine installation. Associated Systems carried out full panel wiring, control desk and on-board junction box installation. Other clay gun projects were for six machines at Waterval Mine in Rustenburg and four for Smelter Platinum in Polokwane. The picture shows a typical tapping machine.
