Flow Measurement & Control

Realtime flow measurement

May 2004 Flow Measurement & Control

The Hawk FMA-10 Flow Master is an ultrasonic flow measurement system providing realtime flow measurement of liquid materials with a continuous 4 to 20 mA output. The head, flow rate and flow volume data can be transmitted in RS232 ACII format, every second, to a terminal or computer.

The system is comprised of an amplifier and one or two transducers, and operates by transmitting an ultrasonic signal from the transducer towards the liquid being monitored. The reflected signal or echo is received by the transducer and processed by the amplifier. Sophisticated software locates and tracks the correct echo without being affected by echoes from fixed objects or changes in the liquid surface.

With dual input amplifiers, two flows can be monitored from one amplifier with two independent flow outputs. Frequency optimisation, automatic power and sensitivity control are designed to suit the application conditions. Flow Master is capable of monitoring liquids under the most difficult foaming situations. It has a wide range of tracking and recovery schedules, and a manual echo selection for difficult applications.

An alphanumeric display makes programming and monitoring easier, and realtime display of gain levels, power level, frequency and signal-to-noise ratio is possible. A temperature sensor is used to correct for the variation in sound velocity due to temperature changes. An internal totaliser integrates the flow rate to determine flow volume, and it may be programmed to reset depending upon volume, time of day, or both.

Up to six SPDT relays may be programmed to switch at head, flow rate or temperature setpoints. Alternatively, they may be programmed to respond to totaliser reset or provide closures for time of day or volume based samplers. Primary areas of application for the Flow Master include open channel flow, water and sewage treatment, irrigation, industrial and power waste.
