A local steel manufacturing company recently commissioned a 1,4 MW, 6,6 kV motor utilising NewElec's 327M electronic motor protection relay. The 327M relay was selected due to the facility it provided for shifting the standard trip curve to permit high inrush currents to be present for up to 84s when starting high inertia loads. This also protects the motor against locked rotor conditions on start-up. Once the motor has reached full operating speed, the standard trip curve is shifted back to the initial position.
Full protection against overloading, phase unbalance, short circuit faults and earth faults is provided, and in addition, the relay may be configured to permit only one, two, or three consecutive start attempts.
The 327M relay can withstand a dip in the auxiliary supply for a full second and consistently monitors thermal capacity which is memorised even if the power supply is removed. It can assist maintenance personnel in identifying fault problems by means of door mounted LEDs.
