New temperature field transmitter offers improved safety

March 2004 IS & Ex

Instrumentation specialist Endress+Hauser has extended its range of temperature field transmitters with the introduction of the iTEMP TMT 162 transmitter with HART protocol for converting input signals to an analog, scalable 4 to 20 mA output signal.

The new transmitter is designed to cope with field applications that demand the highest requirements. The transmitter was designed with the particular needs of the petrochemical and oil/gas industries in mind. Safety was a particular concern and the TMT 162 is explosion-proof and intrinsically safe with certification. In addition to the NAMUR NE 21 for high interference safety and fault conditioning to NAMUR NE 43, the NAMUR NE 89 for recognition of increases in terminal resistance, is complied with. ATEX EX ia, EX d and dust approvals are also adhered to.

The large backlit display, which delivers clear, sharp information that can be read even under difficult conditions, is a key feature of the transmitter. Set-up is quick and easy and can be carried out online, so there is no need to disconnect the measuring point if re-reprogramming is required.

Stainless steel housing is available as an option, as is a second input channel. The dual sensor input enables the TMT 162 to be used for all temperature measuring points, including resistance thermometers, thermocouples, resistance transmitters and voltage transmitters This also allows for substantial cost savings in inventory holding. In addition, the two independent sensor inputs offer a redundant 2-channel measurement (backup functionality), or the possibility of mathematic combination of the two channels, such as differential or average calculation.
